CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Sharing and Caring
London
For five straight days, Agent Nick James goes radio silent. There's no communication of any kind. He didn't bother showing up anywhere, not at school, not at the bar and certainly not at home. Every night I'd stay up and watch TV though, just waiting for the front door to open and for him to step inside. I wouldn't even care if he's still angry. I just want him back.
I don't even know where to look or else I'd have gone looking already. But perhaps it's for the best. I know him. He needs his time. He probably wouldn't appreciate seeing me right now, which is just fine. I understand where he's coming from. I always have. It can't be easy living almost every single day of your life with the person who murdered your sister.
Whenever I think about how James must feel when he found out about me and Sarah, my heart aches because it's the exact same feeling I get whenever I think of John and Enoch and that woman who strapped me to that bed every night to torture me. There are moments when I'm just seized by the sudden desire to break someone's face whenever I remember them.
I bet James feels the same way.
Everything in my world just feels weird right now and I don't even know how to make it right again. What could I possibly say to James that would magically make it all better? And that's how Eddie Carlson finds me in St. George's library: trying to figure out a way to set my life straight again.
"Hey Emily. You look like you could use a friend," he says. I look up briefly at him. But then I decide it's too much effort to actually talk so I just put my head back down against the table. "You don't look so hot. What happened to you?" He asks, all concerned and brotherly now.
I raise my and take a deep breath. Really, what happened to me? Wow. So many things happened to me. Want me to start from when I was six? "Nothing, just… Sam and I kind of got into a fight. He hasn't been home in a few days." I tell him as honestly as I can anyway.
"You haven't heard from him at all?" He still sounds overly concerned.
I shake my head. "Nope. But that's okay. He can take care of himself. I just hope he'll come back soon. I'm having real trouble managing on my own." I say and I'm surprised by the truth of that statement. I've been so used to James just being there for eight years that I hadn't realized I've probably relied on him far more than I should.
Eddie looks at me quizzically then, like he's trying to decipher something. "How long have you guys been together exactly?" I shoot him an angry look because how many times do I have to say— "No, not like that. You said he's not your boyfriend. I get it.
